Dr. Kim is a member of the Stratford Board of Directors, and is advising Stratford on ways to further advance our curriculum to meet 21st century learning needs.

In addition, we interview leading education experts to hear about the latest innovative pedagogies and research-based best practices that can help our young leaders to thrive while they are learning at Stratford.
Recently, we interviewed Dr. Paul Kim, the Assistant Dean and Chief Technology Officer of Stanford University Graduate School of Education. As an education technologist, Dr. Kim’s research and passion lies in the use of mobile technologies to bring quality education to remote and under-resourced areas of the world. It is not hard to find digital footprints about his work on Internet as he has been working with researchers, education leaders, corporate partners, and governments around the globe for over 20 years.
In an interview with Dr. Kim, he passionately described three of his education projects: 1,001 Stories, SMILE, Stanford Mobile Inquiry-based Learning Environment, and ROSE, Remotely Operated Science Experiment.
1,001 stories: This program is a mobile story-telling program that facilitates the creation, development, and gathering of stories from local communities around the world. Not only does the program promote literacy in marginalized communities, the program also gives children a voice to share stories of their lives and struggles in their own communities. His story books are now to be distributed through Worldreader Program, reaching over 4 million children in underserved communities.
The SMILE project: This Stanford Mobile Inquiry-based Learning Environment (SMILE) project aims to increase student inquiry, engagement, and achievement using mobile technology and child-centered pedagogy. Too often in remote and under-resourced areas, children are not encouraged to ask questions in the classroom, but instead are asked to memorize and recall. SMILE, which can be used with all ages, promotes and active-learning classroom, and encourages collaboration between students to develop, present, answer, and evaluate questions. Recently, the SMILE project was mentioned as an innovative solution for the future of education in the 2016 UN report titled “Investing in education for a changing world.”
The ROSE program: Remotely Operating Science Experiment (ROSE) enables students in remote areas in developing countries to perform authentic science experiments through the use of mobile technologies. Using only a mobile device, students in these areas are able to perform real hands-on science experiments, allowing them to experience first-hand the scientific process: identifying a problem, pre-questioning and investigation, developing a hypothesis, experimentation, collecting and organizing evidence, and collaborating and communicating their results.
As a Stratford board member, Dr. Kim is advising Stratford on ways to further advance our curriculum to meet 21st century learning needs. Stratford plans to implement his projects in the coming year in our classrooms and after-school club activities.
