Literary Analysis

Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill.  Students are required to read and understand more and more complex texts as they move through school.  This course is designed to give students the aptitude they need to approach a wide variety of texts.  Students will learn how to predict, summarize, make connections, use textual evidence, and discuss their ideas about literature with their instructor and peers.  They will play reading comprehension games designed to engage and entertain, and promote a lifelong love of reading.

Expository Writing

Informative and descriptive writing are important parts of any school curriculum.  In this class, your student will learn to identify the fundamental writing strategies used in informational writing.  Your student will also learn how to make factual writing more exciting and engaging for the reader.  Grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary will also be included each day.  Students will create and polish their writing, and collaborate on a class newsletter.

Creative Writing

From brainstorming to final revision, students in Stratford’s creative writing course will gain a comprehensive understanding of the writing process and how to create imaginative and innovative stories.  Students will go beyond the basics and learn style, word choice, figurative language, and dialogue.  Students will have opportunities to artistically enhance their narratives and share them with the local community.
