Stratford School Student Wins First Place At Broadcom MASTERS Competition In STEM Technology Category

Stratford School students Herin Kang of San Jose, CA and Annika Viswesh of Sunnyvale, CA were amongst 30 finalists from across the country who presented their pieces of research and competed in team hands-on STEM challenges to demonstrate their skills in critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity at the recent Broadcom MASTERS competition. The Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) is the nation’s premier science and engineering competition encouraging middle school students to fuel their personal interests into STEM-related projects and takes place in Washington D.C.

Herin Kang, an eighth-grade student at Stratford School was awarded first place in the Broadcom MASTERS 2017 Competition in the Technology Category for her project, Energy Efficient Oxygen Generator Using Micro Algae as an Alternative to Window Ventilation. Herin’s unique tool uses algae as an oxygen generator for indoor rooms to replenish oxygen through photosynthesis. First place winners of the STEM Awards were awarded $3,500 to support his or her choice of a STEM summer camp experience in the U.S. as well as an iPad for demonstrating thoughtful skill and promise in the respective categories.

Herin suffers from seasonal allergies and ideated with her assignment as a way to help those who bear similar allergies, as well as those who live in polluted areas, as a means to get fresh air without compromising health. Building off her study that NASA researchers tested algae as a source of oxygen in spaceships, Herin decided to design her oxygen generating project using this viable resource.

“At Stratford School, we bring together a balanced, innovative curriculum with 21st century skills and a deep passion for the areas of STEM/STEAM”, said Sherry Adams, Founder of Stratford School. “We are very proud to have two of our students represented in this national competition with projects that supported our emphasis in improving not only students’ STEM/STEAM skills, but the greater community. Herin has been attending Stratford School since kindergarten and we are incredibly honored to congratulate her big win this year!”

Beginning as early as preschool, Stratford School prepares and equips students with its emphasis in a STEM/STEAM focused curriculum and continues to foster bright and passionate students every year to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS competition.
